Estimated Progeny Difference (E.P.D.) values are exactly what the term implies. If bull A is used on a group of cows, then the resulting calves are expected to have performance differences given by the bulls EPD values relative to EPD values for any other bull of the same breed that could be used on the same group of cows. Higher EPDs are more and lower EPDs are less for the three traits of birth weight, growth, and milk.
Angus E.P.D., (Estimated Progeny Difference), values can be compared with other Angus E.P.D. values across Angus herds during the same evaluation period.
It appears very safe to recommend calving ease bulls for first calf heifers within the Angus breed with E.P.D.s of +2.5 lbs. or less for use on heifers. RCC Angus birth weights are moderate, but to be very safe, RCCs limit is +2.5 lbs. for use on heifers.
Note: Angus EPDs cannot be compared to RCC Adaptor EPDs.
Due to the efforts of the American Simmental Association RCC offers Adaptor EPDs including 30 years of back data supplied by RCC. RCC Adaptor EPDs are comparable with other composite herds whose data are processed by the American Simmental Association. However, RCC Angus EPDs processed by the American Angus Association cannot be compared to RCC Adaptor EPDs processed by the American Simmental Association since they are two separate data banks based on different breed bases.
It appears very safe to recommend calving ease Adaptor bulls for first calf heifers whose birth EPDs are +4 lbs. or less.
Hair Score – HS: is a subjective score of 1 – 5, HS 5 being short and slick and HS 1 having lots of hair. It appears that short- haired slick cattle are more heat tolerant and fescue entophyte resistant. We recommend that when breeding cattle in heat and humidity and especially on fescue pasture make part of your selection for higher hair scores.
Scrotal Circumference: an important indicator trait for improving reproductive potential. Bulls with larger scrotums produce more sperm, and also reach puberty earlier. They pass this favorable, earlier puberty characteristic on to their daughters. Small scrotum bulls have been eliminated.
Dams Udder Score: 5=excellent; 4=very good; 3=good; 2=fair; 1=poor. If you want to improve udders in your next generation of females select bulls out of dams with high udder scores.
